Police Regional Office-7 intensifies anti-crime operations as Christmas approaches

By Xander Ledesma

With the Christmas holidays nearing, the Police Regional Office 7 (PRO7) has intensified its anti-crime operations to bolster public safety and ensure that the festive time remains devoid of criminal activities. Between November 25 and November 27, 2024, a coordinated series of police initiatives throughout the Central Visayas region led to impressive outcomes in the battle against illegal drugs.

These operations resulted in the confiscation of 1.4 kilograms of illegal narcotics, with an estimated value of Php 9,391,616. The substances, seized from multiple locations within the region, are thought to be linked to a larger illegal drug distribution network aimed at areas in Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. Authorities also recovered an array of drug paraphernalia associated with the manufacturing and distribution of these illegal substances.

Besides the drug seizures, 96 individuals were apprehended during these operations. These suspects are believed to be involved in drug activities, including trafficking and distribution, and now face charges under Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Police Brigadier General Roderick Augustus Alba, the PRO7 Director, praised the local police units for their execution of these operations.

The crackdown on illegal narcotics in Central Visayas comes amid worries of increased criminal activities during the holiday period, which usually sees higher economic activity and larger gatherings. The region’s police forces have been enhancing their surveillance and enforcement measures as part of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) nationwide drive against illegal drugs.

PRO7 has a history of leading the PNP’s anti-drug initiatives, regularly conducting significant operations across various regions of Central Visayas. The area has long faced challenges with drug-related crimes, leading law enforcement to adopt a proactive approach toward combating narcotics trafficking and abuse.

Authorities have reaffirmed their dedication to protecting communities and ensuring that the upcoming holiday celebrations occur safely and peacefully. Police operations will persist in the weeks ahead as part of the comprehensive strategy to maintain law and order during the festive season.
