A police officer lost his life, and another traffic officer was injured after being hit by a vehicle on M. Cuenco Avenue in Barangay Kasambagan, Cebu City. The accident took place in the early hours of December 1, 2024.

Local authorities report that 28-year-old Carlo Tachado Bayato, who was part of the Cebu City Police Office, was fatally struck while on traffic duty. The name of the second officer, who was injured, has not yet been released, but he was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Authorities stated that Bayato and the injured officer were positioned along the bustling street as part of normal traffic management when the incident happened. Eyewitnesses indicated that the vehicle involved in the accident lost control right before it hit the officers. It is still uncertain whether the driver was intoxicated or under the influence of substances, as investigations are still in progress.

The driver of the vehicle was detained at the site, and authorities plan to file the necessary charges once the investigation is completed. Additional information regarding the specifics of the crash, including the identity of the driver, has yet to be disclosed.

This occurrence has raised significant concerns about the safety of law enforcement personnel carrying out their duties on crowded streets. There has been a notable rise in traffic-related accidents involving both officers and civilians in recent years. Local officials are calling on the public to be more cautious and to respect officers who are working to uphold order on the roads.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama conveyed his sympathies and pledged to provide assistance to the family of the fallen officer.

Bayato had served with the Cebu City Police for five years and was recognized for his dedication to serving the community. Authorities have not yet shared details about funeral arrangements.
