PNP tapped to assist probe of military lawyer’s death

MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has already provided investigative assistance to the case of the military lawyer who was found dead inside his quarters at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on November 22.

In a press briefing at Camp Crame, Quezon City on Monday, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said the Forensic Group has carried out an investigation on the case of Col. Rolando Escalona Jr. of the Judge Advocate General’s Service (JAGS).

“Na process na rin nila ‘yung (They have already processed) where the incident transpired but as to the nature and progress ng (of the) investigation, the AFP requested we keep it under wraps hanggang ongoing investigation (while the investigation is ongoing),” Fajardo said.

“Let us wait for the culmination and completion ng (of the) investigation with respect to the death of the senior officer of the AFP, out of respect to our AFP counterparts who requested to conduct the investigation in private. We are in constant communication with them.”

Fajardo confirmed the victim had a gunshot wound but refused to provide further details.

“This is still under investigation and we have to find out if he was subjected to ballistic or paraffin examination. We are still waiting for the result of the autopsy. But the family requested some privacy with respect to the update on this case,” she said, adding that the autopsy results may be released within this week.

AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla confirmed Escalona’s death on Sunday. (PNA)
