PH chicken structure recognized as world’s largest

In a unique and eye-catching achievement, Negros Occidental, Philippines, is now home to the world’s largest building in the shape of a chicken. Located within the popular Campuestohan Highland Resort, this structure has officially been recognized by Guinness World Records, setting a new global benchmark for novelty architecture. Standing 34.931 meters (114 feet 7 inches) tall, 12.127 meters (39 feet 9 inches) wide, and 28.172 meters (92 feet 5 inches) long, the chicken-shaped building was verified as the record-holder on September 8, 2024.

Designed by entrepreneur Ricardo “Cano Gwapo” Tan, the building goes beyond mere novelty as it functions as a fully operational hotel within Campuestohan Highland Resort. The resort, located in Talisay City, is known for its family-friendly attractions and scenic views of Negros Island’s mountains and coastline, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The addition of this oversized chicken structure has not only expanded its offerings but has also highlighted the resort’s creativity and penchant for unique architectural themes.

The concept behind the rooster design taps into the Filipino tradition of cockfighting, or sabong, and the rooster’s symbolic role in Philippine culture. Roosters, or manok, are more than just barnyard animals in the Philippines—they are cultural icons symbolizing pride, strength, and resilience. In many rural areas, roosters represent prosperity and are often celebrated in art, festivals, and local folklore. Tan’s vision was to create a structure that reflects this cultural heritage, honoring Filipino identity through architecture that combines functionality with cultural tribute.

Campuestohan Highland Resort has become well-known for its unusual installations, which include life-sized dinosaurs, superhero statues, and cartoon character replicas. The chicken hotel has quickly taken center stage, attracting visitors curious about the novelty of staying inside a giant rooster. Inside, guests find themed accommodations that reflect the quirky exterior, offering an immersive experience that aligns with the resort’s playful and family-friendly atmosphere.

This record-setting structure contributes to a growing trend of larger-than-life, themed architecture worldwide. Like the Big Pineapple in Australia or the giant fish-shaped building in India, the chicken hotel in Negros Occidental adds an element of fun to cultural tourism. For the Philippines, it not only draws attention to local creativity but also emphasizes the country’s commitment to developing unique attractions that resonate with both heritage and innovation.

The rooster hotel is expected to boost tourism in Negros Occidental, putting the province on the map as a destination for travelers seeking unique, culturally inspired experiences. The building stands as a testament to the Philippines’ capacity for inventive tourism, celebrating the country’s rich traditions with a modern, imaginative twist.
