Palace denies Marcos pushing for VP Sara Duterte’s impeachment

Malacañang on Wednesday dismissed claims that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is backing the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Speaking at a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President has not issued any directive or statement supporting Duterte’s removal.

“There is no truth to any report suggesting the President is pursuing the impeachment or trial of Vice President Sara Duterte,” Castro said. “He has not expressed any intent or confidence in removing her from office.”

Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in February over alleged “high crimes,” including a supposed plot against President Marcos. The Senate is expected to convene as an impeachment court once Congress resumes session on June 2.

Twelve newly elected senators will join the 12 incumbent members of the Senate to serve as jurors in the trial. A two-thirds vote is needed for a conviction.

Analysts say the outcome may lean toward acquittal, with several senators seen as Duterte allies. However, political observers cautioned that affiliations could shift and that support is not guaranteed.

As of Tuesday, five senatorial candidates allied with Duterte were poised to win seats. Duterte needs at least nine votes to avoid conviction and remain eligible for future public office.
