The Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) on Thursday welcomed 1,027 “Balik Cebu” passengers from multiple flights in time for the Sinulog festival, marking a lively return of festive celebrations at the airport.
Mary Ann Dimayabao, MCIA information officer, said in a statement that the passengers arrived on five flights originating from Taipei and Seoul. The flights included JX782 (180 passengers), BR282 (302), and CI706 (175) from Taipei, as well as PR485 (192) and TW175 (178) from Seoul. Dimayabao noted that several airlines have increased flight frequencies to Cebu this January, making it more convenient for returning Filipinos and tourists to join the Sinulog festivities.
Despite the spirited reception, an unattended bag found at Terminal 1’s Arrival Area caused a brief disruption. Airport Police and personnel from the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Unit quickly responded, discovering only clothing in the left-behind luggage. Dimayabao underscored that the swift resolution adhered to international safety protocols, reaffirming the airport’s priority on maintaining security for travelers and staff.
Cebu’s Sinulog festival, traditionally held in January, draws thousands of visitors each year to celebrate with street dancing, cultural performances, and religious processions in honor of the Santo Niño. The annual event is considered one of the Philippines’ most renowned festivals, generating significant tourism and economic activity for the region.
