CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The National Irrigation Administration-Northern Mindanao (NIA-10) plans to expand its contract farming program from 1, 000 hectares to 3, 000 ha per recipient by 2025.
NIA-10 Acting Director Larry Franada, speaking at Tuesday’s Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum here, said the agency is awaiting a new memorandum circular from its central office to implement the expansion.
“The contract farming program is designed to enhance farming practices and increase yields. Transitioning from inbred to hybrid rice varieties can significantly boost production,” Franada said.
He also emphasized the importance of optimizing fertilizer use, pointing out that farmers must apply the correct balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to improve soil health.
“This holistic approach not only boosts productivity and sustainability, but also increases farmers’ income,” he added.
In addition, NIA-10 recently acquired PhP 700 million worth of solar pumps to address water shortages in highland areas, particularly for irrigation.
Franada said Lanao del Sur received PhP 500 million for solar pump installations, while Lanao del Norte was allocated PhP 100 million for 70 ha of upland irrigation.
The remaining funds will be used in Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, and Misamis Occidental. (PNA)
