Microplastic wastes threaten salt industry—DOST
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) warned that worsening microplastic pollution could hinder the revival of Pangasinan’s salt industry.
During the inauguration of the first ASIN Center at Pangasinan State University (PSU) Binmaley Campus on February 17, the agency said microplastic contamination in seawater must be addressed to ensure salt quality. Studies have detected tiny plastic particles in marine waters that could end up in salt products.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) earlier noted that the Philippines is among the world’s top contributors to plastic waste. The country generates about 61,000 metric tons of solid waste daily, 12%–24% of which is plastic. DOST said the newly established ASIN Center is expected to help find solutions to the issue.
