A newly constructed Regional Evacuation Center was officially turned over in Barangay Badas, Mati City, Davao Oriental, providing the community with a modern, disaster-resilient facility.
Designed with advanced features to ensure comfort, safety, and functionality, the center has become a vital asset for disaster preparedness in the region.
Constructed at a cost of PHP 46.6 million under the General Appropriations Act, the center was built by AKN Builders of Davao City and supervised by Project Engineer Arnel Bernardino of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region XI.
The City of Mati LGU has been awarded operational management of the facility, which was completed in 11 months.
This state-of-the-art evacuation center can accommodate up to 530 individuals, or roughly 160 families.
With a large open court that doubles as a recreational space and emergency shelter, it closely resembles a modern gymnasium rather than a conventional evacuation center.
In addition to the court, the center includes spacious bathrooms, a mess hall, a fully functional kitchen, a clinic, a prayer room, and an administrative building.
A high-capacity water tank is also part of the facility, ensuring a stable water supply for essential needs, though water flow within the pipes inside the facility is not yet operational.
The evacuation center’s location in Barangay Badas was carefully selected based on safety assessments by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, guaranteeing an elevation safe from the threats of tsunamis and flooding.
The project is part of a larger initiative in Region XI, where 18 similar centers are being constructed to enhance the disaster response infrastructure.
The Mati facility stands as a model, with its multi-use spaces providing not only emergency shelter but also a place for community gatherings, recreational activities, and other local events during non-emergency times.
During the turnover ceremony, officials from DPWH XI, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the Office of Civil Defense, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CIENRO), and City Administrator were present.
Representing Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat and Vice Mayor Enzo Rabat was ABC President Kap. Danny Macaubos.
The opening of the Regional Evacuation Center reinforces Mati City’s commitment to disaster preparedness and community resilience, reflecting a proactive approach to addressing the increasing frequency of natural disasters while supporting the community’s welfare.
