Consumers in Negros Oriental now have a wider selection of Christmas hams and pork by-products for the holiday season following the easing of restrictions related to African swine fever (ASF). Suppliers are now permitted to ship these products to the province, provided they comply with the necessary requirements.
Dr. Alfonso Tundag, quarantine officer for the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in the province, confirmed on Monday that suppliers must secure a certificate of acceptance from the Provincial Veterinary Office of Negros Oriental before shipping products. Additional documentation from the supplier’s point of origin is also required to ensure the shipment meets health and safety standards.
“Deliveries from ASF-affected areas are allowed, but strict compliance with the required documents is necessary. Failure to present these upon arrival will result in the confiscation of the shipment,” Tundag said.
Previously, only Christmas hams from Virginia Food, Inc., a Cebu-based brand, were permitted entry into the province due to Cebu’s ASF-free status at the height of the restrictions. The relaxation of rules has since allowed other brands and suppliers to enter the market, giving consumers more choices during the holiday season.
Negros Oriental Governor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria issued an executive order earlier this year to ease border controls for live hogs and pork by-products. The move aims to mitigate the economic impact of ASF on local businesses and ensure a stable supply of pork products for residents.
The easing of restrictions is expected to benefit both consumers and suppliers, ensuring that holiday demand for pork products is met while maintaining safeguards against ASF.
