Mountain Province declares ‘State of Calamity’ due to typhoon damage

By Michelle Ducut

Mountain Province has declared a state of calamity due to the severe impact of six consecutive typhoons that hit the province since October 24, 2024.

The declaration, approved by the Provincial Board, will enable the provincial government to utilize its calamity fund for recovery and rehabilitation efforts. The typhoons caused widespread damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and properties, displacing hundreds of families.

The Mountain Province Electric Cooperative reported that over 90% of its service area is without power due to the recent typhoon. Additionally, the Department of Public Works and Highways has identified significant damage to road networks, hindering transportation and access to essential services.

As of Monday, 198 families remain displaced and are seeking shelter in evacuation centers or with relatives and friends. The provincial government is working closely with local authorities to provide immediate relief and support to affected communities.
