Mount Kanlaon emits volcanic ash; Alert level raised to 2

By Xander Ledesma

Mount Kanlaon, one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, released volcanic ash on December 1, 2024, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to elevate its alert status to Level 2.

The volcano, located between Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental, emitted ash plumes visible from nearby communities. This activity signals increased unrest, according to PHIVOLCS. While an eruption is not imminent under Alert Level 2, there is a heightened likelihood of volcanic hazards, including lava flows, pyroclastic flows, and ashfall.

Mount Kanlaon, a stratovolcano, has a history of explosive eruptions, with its last major event recorded in 2016. The volcano is both a significant geological feature and a popular tourist attraction on Negros Island.

Nearby towns, including La Carlota City in Negros Occidental and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental, have reported light ashfall, affecting homes, roads, and fields. Residents are advised to take precautions, particularly in low-lying areas where ash may accumulate. As of now, no injuries or damage have been reported.

PHIVOLCS has reinforced the importance of avoiding the permanent danger zone (PDZ), which spans several kilometers around the volcano. Authorities are also monitoring potential risks to aviation, as ash clouds pose hazards to aircraft operations.

Local officials and PHIVOLCS continue to monitor Mount Kanlaon’s activity closely, ensuring that communities and aviation authorities are prepared for any further developments.
