MinDA plans centralized marketplace to enhance Mindanao farmers’ livelihood

By William Agda

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has announced plans to establish a centralized marketplace to support farmers in Mindanao and improve their livelihoods. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen the country’s agricultural sector, emphasizing the critical role of farmers in the nation’s food supply.

MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso Magno stated that by creating a government-supported marketplace, the agency aims to eliminate intermediaries, allowing farmers to earn more from their produce. Magno made this announcement during the Farmers Summit held in Davao City on December 12, 2024, which was attended by 800 farmers from across the region.

The summit also featured the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Center for Asian Mission for the Poor (CAMP ASIA Inc.) and the Davao Mt. Apo Farmers Agricultural Cooperative (DAMAFACO). This agreement formalizes their collaboration on sustainable agricultural programs, with CAMP ASIA providing technical support and facilitating market access, while DAMAFACO focuses on uniting farming communities to strengthen cooperative efforts.

Additionally, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) donated a truck to DAMAFACO to reduce transportation costs for crops and equipment, directly improving the cooperative’s operational efficiency and profitability.

Magno expressed gratitude to public and private stakeholders who contributed to the summit’s success, underscoring the importance of partnerships in advancing the agricultural sector in Mindanao. He emphasized that collaborative efforts are essential in creating a thriving future for farmers and their families.

This initiative is part of MinDA’s broader efforts to empower local government units (LGUs) and promote public-private partnerships (PPPs) across Mindanao. Starting January 2025, MinDA plans to intensify its PPP push to address funding challenges and foster inclusive growth in the region.

Furthermore, MinDA has been actively working to improve agricultural productivity through various initiatives, including the implementation of irrigation projects and support for farmers. These efforts aim to enhance the agricultural value chain and address challenges faced by farmers and fisherfolks in Mindanao.

By establishing a centralized marketplace and supporting infrastructure, MinDA seeks to create a more efficient and profitable environment for Mindanao’s farmers, contributing to the overall development of the region’s agricultural sector.
