The Mati Airport in Davao Oriental will undergo a substantial rehabilitation project in 2025, according to local officials who expect the modernization to stimulate economic growth and tourism in the region.
Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat said on Friday that the upgraded airport will deliver a more efficient travel experience, further positioning Mati—a gateway to destinations such as Dahican Beach and Pujada Bay—as a strategic hub in southeastern Mindanao.
“The upgraded airport will provide a seamless travel experience and position Mati City as a gateway to economic growth and tourism in Mindanao,” Rabat said in an interview.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr), in collaboration with the provincial and city governments, will lead the renovation. Plans include a new passenger terminal building inspired by local culture, a larger parking facility, and improvements to runways and taxiways capable of handling bigger aircraft. Ground service equipment and fire station facilities are also set to be integrated into the airport’s master plan.
Mati Airport, originally named Imelda R. Marcos Airport when it was constructed in 1976, has remained largely underused for decades. Once upgrades are complete, officials anticipate the airport will help boost visitor arrivals to Davao Oriental and improve connectivity for local residents and businesses.
“With improved airport facilities, Davao Oriental can expect an influx of visitors,” Rabat noted, adding that Mati’s beaches and marine attractions could see higher tourist volume.
The Mati Airport project aligns with broader regional development efforts in southeastern Mindanao, where expanded transportation infrastructure is seen as a key factor in promoting inclusive economic growth.
