Marine research center to rise in Davao Occidental island town

SARANGANI, Davao Occidental – The municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, is set to become a hub for marine research with the proposed establishment of a Marine Research Center.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) XI has considered supporting the proposal aiming to advance Davao Occidental’s capabilities in marine biodiversity and sustainable development.

The Marine Research Center is a joint initiative of DOST XI, Provincial Economic Enterprise and Investment Promotions Office (PEEIPO) and the Municipal Local Government Unit of the island municipality of Sarangani.

In a recent coordination meeting, DOST XI regional director Dr. Anthony Sales discussed with Sarangani Mayor Adelan B. De Arce and members of the Municipal Council, on the proposal development, detailed program plans, and the identification and prioritization of research sites.

Sales raised the importance of the involvement of  stakeholders from industry, academia, civil society, and media.

The Sangguninang Bayan members have pledged their support by committing to craft a board resolution endorsing the establishment of the Marine Research Center, which signaled a strong local government backing for the project.

The proposed research areas include the Bolaye Cove in Barangay Laker, Patuco Cove in Brgy. Patuco, and Tumanao Cove in Brgy. Camahual, where Sales and the other stakeholders conducted ocular visits after the coordination meeting.

These sites are expected to serve as pivotal research stations for exploring marine biodiversity and sustainable development practices.

This initiative is aligned with the Davao Occidental Research for Development Agenda (DORDA), reflecting a strategic approach to environmental protection and economic development.

The collaborative efforts of PEEIPO, Sarangani MLGU, and DOST XI will enable policymakers to make informed, data-driven decisions aimed at preserving marine ecosystems while fostering economic growth.

The Davao Occidental Marine Research Center promises to play a crucial role in guiding the community towards effective conservation efforts, ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources and paving the way for a future where environmental stewardship and economic prosperity go hand-in-hand.
