Mapua, EAC shake off NCAA basketball foes

MANILA – Clint Escamis scored a game-high 19 points to lead Mapua University past Jose Rizal University (JRU), 88-81, in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Season 100 men’s basketball at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Sunday.

Escamis, who fired four triples, also came up with four rebounds and two assists as the Cardinals joined the Letran Knights in second place at 5-2.

Other Cardinals who produced double-digit scores were Lawrence Mangubat, who had 16 points, five rebounds and two steals; Chris Hubilla, who made 15 points to go with three rebounds and three assists; Marc Cuenco, who chipped in 13 points; and Jeco Bancale with 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Mapua controlled the first three quarters before JRU rallied to within 66-71 on Joshua Guiab’s three-pointer.

Guiab finished with 17 points, three rebounds and two assists for JRU, which fell into a three-way tie for sixth place at 2-5.

Meanwhile, Emilio Aguinaldo College banked on King Gurtiza to nip Lyceum of the Philippines University, 90-88.

Gurtiza delivered 21 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Generals tied their opponents at 3-2 for fifth place.

Paolo Bagay contributed 11 points, Axel Doromal had 11 points  while Harvey Pagsanjan, Gil Quinal and Gelo Loristo scored eight each.

John Barba scored 19 points on top of 14 rebounds for the Pirates.

Gyle Montano added 14 points and six rebounds, while Renz Villegas and Simon Penafiel chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. (PNA)
