On December 12, 2024, an ambush in Rajah Buayan, Maguindanao del Sur, resulted in the deaths of a woman, her three-month-old daughter, and their driver. The victims, identified as Harrah Jinn Utto Lumenda, her infant daughter, and driver Nunokan Manalindo, were traveling to Barangay Gaunan when attacked in Barangay Mileb. A relative, Bai Kong Lumenda Utto, sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Lieutenant Argie Eyana, chief of the Rajah Buayan municipal police, stated that authorities are exploring multiple leads, including the possibility of a “rido,” or clan feud, as the motive behind the attack. Despite this line of inquiry, the victims’ relatives have reported no known adversaries. Investigators recovered .45-caliber pistol shells at the scene. Lieutenant Eyana has called on the public to provide any information that could assist in identifying the perpetrators, assuring confidentiality for informants.
Rajah Buayan Mayor Bai Maruja Ampatuan Mastura confirmed that the deceased woman was the spouse of one of her military escorts. She expressed uncertainty regarding the motive and indicated that the investigation is ongoing.
Clan feuds, known locally as “rido,” are a persistent issue in parts of Mindanao, including Maguindanao del Sur. These conflicts often stem from disputes over land, political rivalries, or personal grievances, leading to cycles of retaliatory violence that can span generations. Efforts to mediate and resolve such feuds involve both formal legal mechanisms and traditional conflict resolution practices.Â
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, urging community members to come forward with any information that may aid in resolving the case and preventing further violence.
