MANILA – A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted Occidental Mindoro on Monday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The tectonic quake struck 23 kilometers northeast of Lubang at 6:42 p.m. It was 116 km deep.
Intensity IV (moderately strong) was felt in Lubang.
Intensity III (weak) was reported in Quezon City, Makati City and Taguig City in Metro Manila; Obando, Bulacan; Hermosa, Bataan; Cainta, Rizal; and Cabuyao City, Laguna.
Intensity II (slightly) felt was recorded in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Cuenca and Talisay, Batangas; City of Tagaytay and Bacoor in Cavite, while it was Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Muntinlupa City, also in Metro Manila.
Phivolcs also logged the following instrumental intensities:
Intensity III – City of Tagaytay, Cavite; City of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.
Intensity II – City of Navotas; Pandi, and San Rafael, Bulacan; Bauan, Talisay, and City of Tanauan, Batangas; Naic, Ternate, and City of Trece Martires, Cavite;
City of Calamba, Laguna; Abra De Ilog, Magsaysay, and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.
Intensity I – City of Malabon; Bulakan, Bustos, and Paombong, Bulacan; Rosario, Batangas; City of San Pablo, Laguna; Dolores, Gumaca, and Mauban, Quezon; Tanay, Rizal.
Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.
Phivolcs said damage is not expected, but aftershocks are possible. (PNA)
