Magnitude 5.4 quake shakes Zambo del Norte

MANILA – A magnitude 5.4 earthquake that is tectonic in origin shook Zamboanga del Norte on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake, which Phivolcs initially reported as magnitude 6.1, struck 5 kilometers southeast of Siocon at 11:41 a.m.

It was 43 km. deep.

Intensity V was felt in Siocon; Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay; Isabela City.

Intensity IV was felt in Zamboanga City; Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte; Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur; Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Intensity III was reported in City of Dipolog and President Manuel A. Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte; Buug and Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Intensity II was reported in San Jose, Antique; City of Himamaylan, Negros Occidental; Molave, Zamboanga del Sur; and intensity I in City of Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.

Phivolcs, meanwhile, recorded instrumental Intensity IV in Zamboanga City.

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake. On the other hand, instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Phivolcs said damage is not expected, but aftershocks are possible.

Earlier, a 5.8 quake also hit Southern Leyte. The tectonic quake struck 10.01 kilometers southeast of the municipality of San Francisco at 7:39 a.m. (PNA)
