Lucban Calls for Water Conservation as El Niño Dries Up Springs and Weakens Household Supply

Residents of Lucban, Quezon are being urged to conserve water as the effects of El Niño begin to strain the municipality’s natural water sources, leaving some canals dry and reducing water pressure in affected communities.

The local government raised concerns over critically low spring water levels, which have begun affecting the flow of water to households. With supplies becoming less reliable, residents have been advised to use water responsibly and prepare sufficient reserves for essential daily needs.

Mayor Agustin Villaverde said the municipal government is taking measures to sustain water services despite the declining supply. The situation places growing pressure on local authorities to manage available resources while ensuring that families continue to have access to water for drinking, cooking, sanitation, and other basic necessities.

The concern extends beyond Lucban. PAGASA has warned that El Niño conditions could strengthen toward the end of 2026 and continue into the first half of 2027, raising the possibility of prolonged dry conditions in vulnerable communities. Reduced rainfall can limit the replenishment of springs and other water sources, making conservation increasingly important as the dry spell continues.

For households, even small adjustments can help reduce unnecessary consumption. Repairing leaks, avoiding excessive water use, reusing suitable household water for cleaning, and storing supplies in clean, covered containers can help families prepare for interruptions without creating additional waste.

Lucban’s situation highlights the importance of protecting local water resources before shortages become more severe. While the municipality works to maintain distribution, community cooperation will be essential in stretching available supplies and protecting access to one of the most basic public necessities.
