De La Salle University’s JC Macalalag delivered a career-best 28 points to lead the Green Archers past the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 92-80, in the UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday, October 25, at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City. With starting guard Jacob Cortez sidelined by a right knee injury, Macalalag stepped up by shooting an impressive 6-of-8 from three-point range, while contributing three rebounds and three assists. The victory gave La Salle its second consecutive win and improved its record to 5-4, securing sole possession of third place in the standings.
Macalalag received crucial offensive support from Doy Dungo, who contributed a career-high 24 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while rookie Joaquin Tovera added 15 points and nine assists. Trailing 71-67 entering the fourth quarter, La Salle mounted a decisive 18-3 run to seize an 85-74 advantage with less than five minutes remaining. The Green Archers outscored UST 25-9 in the final period, overturning the Tigers’ lead despite their impressive 17 three-pointers throughout the game. Amiel Acido paced UST with 20 points, but the Tigers fell to 4-5 after suffering their second straight defeat.
Following the victory, Macalalag credited his teammates and coaching staff for their confidence in him, particularly Cortez, who encouraged him before the game despite being unable to play. The performance demonstrated the Green Archers’ ability to respond to injuries through their “next-man-up” approach, with multiple players taking on greater responsibilities in Cortez’s absence. The result also allowed La Salle to avenge its first-round defeat to UST, strengthening its position in the race for the Final Four as the second round of the elimination tournament continues.
