MANILA — A baby aged four months was among 636 individuals rescued from exploitation syndicates since 2022, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil announced Sunday.
The operations, targeting illegal networks exploiting vulnerable children, reflect the PNP’s commitment to combating such crimes under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive.
“The PNP stands firm in its fight against all forms of child exploitation. These 636 rescued victims represent lives saved and futures restored. Every rescue mission is a step closer to justice and a safer environment for our children,” Marbil said in a news release.
One of the most disturbing cases involved a baby in Taguig City put up for sale by the mother, with the help of the aunt.
Both were arrested in an operation led by the Women and Children Protection Center.
Since 2022, the PNP has conducted 307 operations against online sexual abuse and exploitation of children, leading to 167 arrests and 12 convictions.
Marbil highlighted the role of artificial intelligence tools in tracking perpetrators, enabling quicker rescues and successful prosecutions.
He urged Filipinos to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of exploitation. (PNA)
