Iloilo police tighten security measures for holiday season

By Xander Ledesma

The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) has announced enhanced security measures in Iloilo City and the Western Visayas region as the holiday season brings increased crowds and activities. During a Command Conference on December 1, 2024, Police Brigadier General Jack L. Wanky, PRO-6 regional director, directed the full deployment of police personnel to key areas to ensure public safety.

PBgen Wanky stressed the importance of heightened security in high-traffic locations such as shopping malls, transport hubs, and tourist sites. The influx of shoppers, travelers, and tourists during the festive season has historically been associated with an increase in petty crimes like theft and pickpocketing.

The holiday season, a peak period for tourism and shopping, poses unique challenges for maintaining public order. Iloilo City, recognized as a commercial hub and tourist destination, is taking proactive measures to safeguard residents and visitors alike.

Police presence will be significantly increased in critical locations, including major shopping centers such as SM City Iloilo and Robinsons Place, and transit points like Iloilo International Airport and the Ceres Bus Terminal. These efforts aim to deter criminal activity, ensure swift responses to emergencies, and create a secure environment for holiday celebrations.

Traffic management will also be adjusted to accommodate the surge in vehicles and pedestrians, particularly during peak hours. Commuters and residents can expect changes in traffic patterns and enhanced coordination at busy intersections.

PBgen Wanky called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining security. The Philippine National Police (PNP) is working closely with local government units (LGUs), transportation agencies, and private security teams to ensure a coordinated response to safety concerns.
