The International Labour Organization (ILO) hosted a stakeholders’ forum in Siargao Island on October 18, 2024, to promote sustainable economic initiatives by bridging the island’s coconut and tourism sectors. The event, part of the Rebuilding Better Coconut Economy project funded by the Government of Japan, brought together key players from various industries to collaborate on strategies for resilience and sustainability.

The forum aimed to align Siargao’s agriculture and fishery sectors with its growing tourism industry. Participants identified opportunities for collaboration and discussed an integrated local economic development strategy. The goal was to create sustainable agricultural and eco-tourism initiatives that balance environmental conservation with economic progress.

The gathering also focused on the development of a multi-stakeholder coordination strategy to ensure the effective implementation of proposed projects. By strengthening links between coconut farming, fishery practices, and tourism, the forum highlighted the potential for a more diversified and sustainable local economy.

The ILO emphasized that the project is designed to support Siargao in building a resilient future, ensuring that its natural resources and industries can thrive together. This effort reinforces Siargao’s position as a leader in sustainable development and eco-tourism.
