From Davao to the top: Isaac Orig’s med school triumph

In a remarkable achievement for the Davao community, Isaac Edron Jones Orig, a graduate of the Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF), has claimed the top spot in the 2024 Physician Licensure Examination (PLE) with an impressive score of 89.33 percent. Orig’s success not only places him at the pinnacle of the licensure exam but also shines a spotlight on his journey through Davao’s academic institutions.

Before pursuing medicine, Orig already made waves as a Registered Medical Technologist (RMT), securing seventh place in the Medical Technologist Licensure Examination in 2019. His academic record is equally impressive, graduating as valedictorian from Notre Dame of Kidapawan College and earning a summa cum laude distinction at San Pedro College in Davao City, where he studied Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science.

In the lead-up to the exam, Orig shared his thoughts and reflections through a Facebook post, emphasizing his commitment to using both virtues and knowledge in his future medical career. He wrote about the challenges he faced during his residency at San Pedro Hospital, where he learned the true meaning of dedication and compassion.

Like many examinees, Orig observed some board exam superstitions, which he detailed in an interview with Bombo Radyo Davao. From wearing red underwear to sharpening his pencils with the help of a topnotcher resident, Orig embraced the lighthearted traditions in hopes of boosting his chances.

Orig remains undecided about his future specialization, but he is certain about his intention to give back to the community. He expressed a strong desire to teach at medical schools, particularly his alma mater, DMSF, where he hopes to inspire the next generation of medical professionals.

Orig’s success has been met with pride from fellow Dabawenyos. Residents like Marilou Bandaja and Nina Itao emphasized how his achievement reflects the strength and competitiveness of their community. Many believe that his success is not just a personal victory but a testament to the talent and dedication of Davao’s people.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) reported that out of 6, 600 examinees, 3, 845 passed the PLE. Isaac Orig’s story stands out not just for his academic achievements but for the resilience and community spirit that have been central to his journey.
