Fire breaks out on dry-docked ship in Mandaue City; firefighters contain blaze

A fire broke out on a dry-docked ship in Sitio Mahayahay, Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at around 11 a.m., prompting an emergency response from local firefighting units. The blaze spread quickly across the vessel, sending thick smoke into the sky. However, firefighters successfully contained the fire, which was officially declared extinguished at 12:49 p.m., after nearly two hours of intense firefighting efforts.

The fire occurred in Barangay Labogon, an industrial area known for its numerous shipyards and dry-docking operations. The area, which has long been a hub for maritime activities, hosts various vessels undergoing repairs and maintenance. Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, but it is confirmed that no passengers or crew members were aboard the ship at the time of the incident.

Firefighters from the Mandaue City Fire Department, supported by teams from nearby stations, quickly responded to the scene. They used fire trucks and heavy-duty hoses to battle the flames. The fire was contained within a short period, preventing it from spreading to adjacent ships or nearby structures.

A spokesperson for the Mandaue City Fire Department praised the swift action of the firefighting teams, noting that their prompt response likely prevented further destruction and loss of life. “Thanks to our firefighters’ quick and coordinated efforts, the fire did not escalate into a much larger disaster,” the spokesperson said.

The dry-docking facility where the fire occurred is part of the city’s industrial landscape, which includes a significant number of maritime-related businesses. In such areas, the presence of combustible materials such as fuel, chemicals, and paints increases the risk of fires. As a result, fire safety remains a top priority in these zones.

Mandaue City, which has multiple shipyards and heavy industries, has continuously worked to address fire safety concerns in industrial zones. Local authorities regularly conduct fire drills and safety awareness programs for workers in these high-risk areas to prevent accidents.

Barangay Labogon, one of Mandaue’s industrial centers, has seen rapid growth in recent years, with the expansion of businesses and the development of nearby residential areas. This growth has raised concerns about the adequacy of fire safety measures to accommodate the changing landscape.

While no injuries were reported, the fire has raised concerns over potential environmental risks. The vessel was undergoing maintenance, and there are concerns that it may have contained hazardous materials such as oil or fuel. Local authorities are investigating any possible environmental damage, including contamination of nearby water sources.

This incident has drawn attention to the ongoing challenges of managing hazardous materials in industrial areas. Environmental advocates have called for stricter regulations and improved safety protocols to protect both the community and the surrounding ecosystem.
