The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 13 (Caraga) has distributed PHP7.3 million in cash-for-work payments to 1,074 students of the Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) – Del Carmen Campus in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.
The payouts, conducted on Monday, were part of the Kapangyarihan at Kaunlaran sa Barangay – Cash-For-Work (KKB-CFW) initiative under the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) program, the DSWD-13 said in a statement Tuesday.
The students participated in community service for 35 to 65 days, performing various tasks aimed at fostering local development. The cash-for-work initiative provides short-term employment opportunities while alleviating financial burdens, particularly for students, the department noted.
Tasks assigned included maintaining the cleanliness of public areas, clearing canals to prevent mosquito breeding, and other activities that directly benefit the community.
Arnold, a 20-year-old student from Barangay Poblacion, expressed gratitude for the program, saying, “This initiative not only helps me with my education expenses but also allows me to contribute to the improvement of our community.”
The KALAHI-CIDSS program’s cash-for-work modality is designed to empower participants to contribute to local development while receiving financial support. It also emphasizes the importance of engaging students in activities that foster a sense of responsibility and community involvement.
Arnold added, “I am thankful for the government’s efforts to provide programs like this, which address the needs of students and promote their welfare.”
The initiative highlights the government’s commitment to supporting students, particularly in areas affected by socio-economic challenges. The DSWD emphasized that the program serves as a dual-purpose initiative—helping participants with immediate financial needs while contributing to sustainable community development.
The department continues to encourage local stakeholders and beneficiaries to participate in similar programs aimed at reducing poverty and enhancing community welfare in vulnerable regions.
