DSWD-Cordillera extends aid to typhoon victims with damaged homes

By Michelle Ducut

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has provided PHP 190, 000 in financial assistance to 33 individuals in the Cordillera region whose homes were affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine and Super Typhoon Leon. Each beneficiary receives PHP 5, 000 through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.

According to DSWD-Cordillera Regional Director Maria Aplaten, the distribution began during the height of the typhoons and continues despite recent weather disturbances. The funds aim to aid victims in Benguet, Apayao, Mountain Province, and Ifugao, where hundreds of homes were damaged.

In total, approximately 348 homes across the region were partially damaged, while six were completely destroyed. The majority of the damage occurred in Kalinga, followed by Mountain Province, Apayao, and other areas. Aplaten emphasized that further payouts are delayed due to ongoing typhoon activity, but assured that support will continue.

The DSWD is coordinating with the Department of Human Settlement and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the National Housing Authority (NHA) to address the needs of residents with partially damaged homes. Local governments have also provided assistance to those affected.
