DSWD allocates millions for seed capital to Bicol livelihood groups

The Department of Social Welfare and Development in the Bicol Region (DSWD-5) has distributed over PHP3.27 million in seed capital to 16 Sustainable Livelihood Program Associations (SLPAs) involved in food-related projects across Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, and Albay. DSWD-5 Director Norman Laurio announced the funding in a media release on Wednesday, noting that the grants were awarded to the associations, which represent over 200 members, during a series of events held in October.

The livelihood groups receiving the capital are engaged in projects such as rice retailing, vegetable farming, poultry raising, and crab fattening. According to Laurio, these community-led initiatives aim to provide affordable food options while generating sustainable income for local residents, aligning with DSWD’s mission to reduce food insecurity and poverty in the region. By supporting locally driven agricultural and food production efforts, DSWD seeks to strengthen economic resilience in Bicol, ensuring families have reliable access to essential resources.

The seed capital is part of DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program, which focuses on building economic self-sufficiency among marginalized communities. The program helps enhance food security, promotes local entrepreneurship, and ultimately contributes to the economic stability of the region. Through initiatives like these, DSWD aims to support Bicolano families in achieving sustainable income streams while fostering regional growth.
