MANILA – Two new roads worth PHP49.35 million were completed in San Jorge town and Calbayog City, Samar, which would further boost agricultural productivity and improve local connectivity in these areas, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported on Thursday.
In a statement, DPWH 8 (Eastern Visayas) Director Edgar Tabacon said the completed project in San Jorge is a two-lane, portland concrete cement pavement spanning 700 meters with 14.23 meters of stone masonry, which now connects Barangay Buenavista to Barangay Janipon.
“This new road facilitates cheaper and faster transport and delivery of rice, vegetables, and root crops of farmers to bigger market hubs in the town proper,” he added.
The DPWH official said they also finished road opening works on a 2.15-km. access road that will link the hard-to-reach communities of Barangays Canhumadac and Helino to urbanized areas in Calbayog City.
“This new road would provide residents of isolated zones access to education, healthcare, employment, and other basic social services needed to uplift their daily living conditions,” Tabacon said.
Both projects were implemented by the DPWH Samar 1st District Engineering Office funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
On the other hand, the concreting of the access road in Calbayog City is proposed to be included in the 2026 GAA. (PNA)
