Discover the wonders of Panguil River Eco-Park

By Germaine de Castro – Sunday Punch

When the rainy season arrives in the Philippines, from June to November, it’s common for outdoor enthusiasts like myself to shift away from hiking muddy mountain trails. Instead, I turn to other activities such as museum visits, food trips, fun runs, or, my personal favorite, waterfall adventures. Muddy terrain on mountains can be a challenge, so waterfall destinations offer a refreshing alternative. One such hidden gem is Panguil River Eco-Park, located in Barangay Natividad, Pangil, Laguna.

Around 80 kilometers from Manila, the Panguil River Eco-Park, once known as Piit Resort, offers a serene nature escape for local and international visitors alike. Its lush surroundings and natural attractions, including the famous Ambon-Ambon Falls, make it a go-to spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the outdoors without straying too far from the city.

To get there, drive along the Manila East Road and National Highway, passing through several Rizal towns. Upon reaching the junction of Siniloan, Famy, and Mabitac, turn left at the visible highway sign that directs you towards the eco-park. This route is accessible for most types of vehicles, making the journey itself enjoyable with scenic views along the way.

One interesting aspect of Panguil River Eco-Park is its subtle yet rich history. Upon entering the site, visitors are greeted by a small monument featuring an old cannon. This signifies the area’s historical role as a former site for manufacturing gunpowder during the Spanish era, serving the Spanish military at the time. This adds a layer of depth to the experience, intertwining nature and history in one destination.

Our main goal during the visit was to trek to the iconic Ambon-Ambon Falls. After arriving at the Administration Office, we paid the guide fee for the falls trek—necessary for navigating the park’s more rugged areas. A small fee covers up to five visitors, and a list of other available amenities and rates can be found in the office.

Upon entering the park through the main gate, you’re immediately embraced by the calming atmosphere. Clear signage makes it easy to navigate, whether you’re heading for the waterfalls, the swimming area, or other spots in the park. The journey to the falls itself is an experience, starting with a walk across a hanging bridge, leading to a cemented rocky trail. The sound of rushing water and the rich greenery around you heighten the sense of adventure.

Along the way to the falls, we encountered some stunning rock formations, each with its own charm. “Barkong Bato,” which translates to “rock boat,” and “Biak Na Bato,” meaning “split rock,” are natural formations that have become landmarks on the trail. These stops provide perfect photo opportunities and moments to appreciate the park’s geological wonders.

Reaching the falls involves three thrilling raft (balsa) rides, making for an exciting and immersive experience. This is where the life vests come in handy, ensuring a safe adventure for everyone. The crystal-clear waters of Ambon-Ambon Falls offer a refreshing reward after the journey, and you can take a dip to cool off.

After our falls adventure, we took some time to visit other parts of the eco-park, including a shallow swimming area and the spillway portion. These sections provide more laid-back activities, allowing visitors to relax and take in the natural beauty at a slower pace.

Panguil River Eco-Park offers a blend of natural beauty, adventure, and history. Its accessibility from Manila and the variety of activities make it an ideal destination for families, friends, or solo travelers looking to escape the city and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re in it for the adventure of Ambon-Ambon Falls or the peaceful ambiance of the eco-park, this destination has something for everyone.

In a country as rich in natural beauty as the Philippines, Panguil River Eco-Park is a reminder that some of the best spots are just a few hours away. So, the next time the rainy season arrives and hiking becomes too challenging, consider exploring the waterfalls, parks, and other hidden gems of Laguna. Nature’s wonders are waiting to be discovered—why not start with Panguil River Eco-Park?
