Director Ryan Machado wins 2024 Gawad Chancellor for ‘Outstanding Artist’

Director Ryan Machado, a talented filmmaker and playwright from Romblon, has been honored with the 2024 Gawad Chancellor for Outstanding Artist award of the University of the Philippines Manila. The recognition highlights his “exceptional contributions to the arts and culture, underscoring his influence in showcasing Filipino talent on the global stage.”

Machado’s works have been featured in numerous prominent international film festivals, including the 28th Busan International Film Festival, the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, and the 35th Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. These international accolades demonstrate his exceptional storytelling and his ability to highlight Filipino narratives on the world stage.

In 2023, Machado earned the Best Direction award at the Cinemalaya Film Festival for his film Huling Palabas, a testament to his innovative filmmaking and dedication to his craft. He also secured third place at the 2022 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, one of the Philippines’ most esteemed literary awards, further solidifying his position in the country’s creative industry.

His short film Engkwento was nominated at the 2018 FAMAS Awards and officially selected for the 2017 Cinema Rehiyon festival, further affirming his talent in short film production.

In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Machado serves as an Instructor 4 at the University of the Philippines Manila, where he continues to mentor the next generation of filmmakers, inspiring them to pursue excellence in the arts.
