DICT improves internet access in remote Northern Mindanao areas

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has expanded internet connectivity to remote and underserved communities in Northern Mindanao, with 13, 462 free Wi-Fi access points now operational across the region.

Speaking at the “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” forum on Tuesday, DICT-10 Regional Director Sittie Rahma Alawi reported that 53 Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) have been connected, including former insurgency-affected villages.

“These communities now have access to free Wi-Fi, enabling improved communication, education, and access to government services,” Alawi said.

In addition to expanding connectivity, DICT supported Camiguin province’s implementation of the Electronic Business One-Stop Shop program, which streamlines business permit applications and renewals.

The rollout includes 889 active access sites in 516 locations across the region. The most recent deployment was completed in Misamis Oriental in October.

The initiative is part of DICT’s nationwide program to bridge the digital divide and provide technology access to marginalized areas.
