The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in Caraga has achieved a significant milestone by reaching a 96% penetration rate for its Free WiFi for All program. As of November 15, 2024, 791 access points have been deployed across the region’s five provinces, boosting internet accessibility for residents.
During the “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” forum on November 19, Lawrence Salang, chief of DICT-13’s technical operations division, highlighted the program’s impact on education, communication, and access to government services. The deployment includes 246 access points in Surigao del Norte, 172 in Surigao del Sur, 113 in Agusan del Norte, 89 each in Agusan del Sur and Butuan City, and 82 in the Dinagat Islands.
The initiative has achieved full municipal coverage in Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, the Dinagat Islands, and Butuan City. Meanwhile, Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur achieved 92% and 86% municipal coverage, respectively. Beyond public WiFi, the program has connected 84 national government agencies, 13 local government offices, 11 schools, and multiple health facilities, enhancing institutional connectivity.
The Free WiFi for All program is part of DICT’s national efforts, which aim to install 15,000 free WiFi sites nationwide by the end of 2024, expanding digital connectivity to underserved communities. Since its launch, the initiative has played a key role in reducing the digital divide, aligning with the government’s push for inclusive digital transformation.
Efforts in Caraga also include ICT literacy programs, cybersecurity advocacy, and assisting local government units in streamlining services through technology. Such initiatives reflect the ongoing national effort to improve internet infrastructure, which remains critical in ensuring equitable access to technology across the Philippines.
