Davao City to build public internet center

By Sonya Delgado

The Davao City Government hopes to improve the public’s internet access through the establishment of the Davao City Public Internet Center at the People’s Park.

The proposed center is set to have two stories with 60 computer units placed on the second floor. It will also have 6 units on the ground floor for persons with disabilities.

Aside from having an ample number of computer units, the center will also be fitted with a strong internet and WiFi connection that is free and can also benefit the immediate surroundings of the center.

The center is an extension of the internet services of the Davao City Library and Information Center.

“We have extended this service because there are many people who want to use a computer but cannot afford it,” Coun. Bonz Andre Militar, chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Information and Communications Committee, said during the recent Aprubado sa Konseho media forum.

He also added that those who are living far from the center can book a unit in advance.

Militar said that the center’s plan is already done and approved by Mayor Sebastian Duterte and they are just waiting on the City Engineer for the cost estimate.

The cost estimate is crucial for the crafting of the project’s procurement plan and design.

While the project is still at the committee level, Militar said they are pushing for its finalization so they could include it in next year’s annual budget.
