The Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11) assured consumers on Thursday that the region’s pork supply will be sufficient for the holiday season despite ongoing cases of African swine fever (ASF) in some areas.
Dr. Karl Laurence Pineda, DA-11’s alternate livestock program focal person, stated during a press briefing that the supply remains stable, with no significant price increases observed so far.
“At present, there is no substantial increase in pork prices. However, prices might slightly rise depending on demand as the holiday season progresses,” Pineda said.
He also confirmed that reported ASF cases in the region have been managed effectively, with mitigation measures in place to prevent further outbreaks.
In related efforts to boost hog production, the Tiblawan Fishermen Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative (TIFFARMCO) in Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, received a PHP5 million bio-secured and climate-controlled swine facility under the DA-11’s Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) program. The initiative includes a swine housing facility, 100 swine, feeds, and biologics to support hog sector recovery and repopulation in ASF-affected areas.
“This project will aid the community in accelerating hog repopulation,” Pineda said.
TIFFARMCO chairperson Roberto Armasa expressed appreciation for the assistance, acknowledging the impact of the facility on local farmers and fishers. “We are grateful for the support from DA and our LGU,” he said.
