MANILA – Over 1,500 seizures of contraband items worth PHP81 billion were recorded by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) this year.
In a news release Sunday, Director Verne Enciso of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) attributed the apprehensions to intelligence initiatives, with seizures almost doubling yearly since 2022.
“Two years later, here we are, with results that speak for themselves. Under the visionary leadership of Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio and Deputy Commissioner (Juvymax) Uy, the Intelligence Group (IG) has made remarkable strides in performance,” he said.
“From 729 seizures worth PhP24 billion in 2022, we have now, in 2024, achieved an astounding 1,537 seizures with a total value of PhP81 billion — and counting,” he added.
Of the amount, PHPP55 billion came from CIIS-Manila International Container Terminal.
Rubio exhorted the IG to sustain their momentum.
“Good governance and effective measures against illicit trade have strengthened the organization’s collaborative efforts, enhanced border security and facilitated smoother trade processes,” he said.
“With these in mind, I encourage you to build upon your progress and conclude the year with renewed dedication as we gear up for more years of excellence.”
Uy likewise commended the IG Intelligence Group for its invaluable contributions to achieving the BOC mission of securing the nation’s frontiers from illicit trade and contraband and safeguarding economic development. (PNA)
