Comelec withdraws petition to disqualify Cagayan de Oro congressional candidate

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has withdrawn its petition to disqualify Raineir Joaquin Uy, a congressional candidate for the First District of this city in the 2025 elections.

On Wednesday, the Comelec Law Department filed a motion before the Second Division in Manila, seeking to withdraw its motu proprio petition. The department cited the receipt of new information relevant to the case, necessitating further investigation and reassessment.

The original petition was linked to allegations of an irregular increase in voters in District 1, particularly in Barangay Carmen, where Uy serves as barangay chairperson.

Lawyer Alan Genoso, representing Uy, expressed approval of the Comelec’s decision, highlighting the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

“From the very start, we called for the facts and evidence to prevail. We will remain focused on delivering meaningful service and moving forward together for the progress of Cagayan de Oro,” Genoso said.

Uy, who previously ran for the same seat and lost to incumbent Representative Lordan Suan in 2022, is once again set to challenge Suan in the upcoming 2025 elections.
