Comelec encourages media entities to hold public debates

MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday encouraged media entities to hold senatorial debates for those running during the May mid-term polls for the voters to know the candidates and their stand on certain issues.

“We are inviting the radio and television stations, maybe they want to hold debates. We will give them the go signal,” Comelec Chair George Garcia said in a radio interview.

The poll body chief clarified that “there is no such law that can compel candidates to attend (debates).”

“But we can try that (issuing a resolution) by making it part of our rules,” he said.

It was in the May 2022 polls, when the Comelec last organized election debates. (PNA)
