Cleantramuros: Cleaning up a heritage

The practice of volunteerism nowadays in our country has always been present even before the rampant presence of social media entered into our everyday lives.

Volunteers provide invaluable help to individuals and organizations in the form of knowledge, skills, time, and resources in certain aspects related towards humanitarian aid or social services. And as far as the government and society are concerned, both would definitely appreciate and treasure these kinds of extraordinary individuals, whose actions are driven by love for others and who do not demand monetary compensation for their efforts.

Armed with the bayanihan spirit, volunteerism for a Filipino has always been embedded in the soul, whether or not it would eventually benefit their family, community, and society as a whole. It would then not be surprising to see loads of Filipinos participating in events like coastal cleanups, animal shelter visits, outreach programs, and the like.

But what would volunteerism mean when heritage comes into the picture?

Way back March 2023, the Intramuros Administration kicked off a community-based and homegrown project called “Cleantramuros”  to promote a culture of cleanliness in the most famous tourist destination in Manila.

This long-term project would call for the support from the Intramuros community, public and private sectors, as well as local and international non-profit organizations to take part in this worthwhile volunteer undertaking aimed towards a much healthier environment in the fabled Walled City, thus attracting more visitors due to its continuous development.

Cleantramuros is done every weekend, either on a Saturday or a Sunday, depending on the announcements as seen in the Intramuros Administration Facebook page. Short briefing and area assignment are held at the Plaza Roma area, and the activity proper commences at 8 a.m. and ends around 9:30 a.m.

The specific areas for the cleanup on a given day vary depending on certain conditions such as the amount of garbage seen in a certain location, as well as the assurance of the safety and security of the volunteers.

Apart from a free entrance to Fort Santiago given to volunteers after the cleanup and a Certificate of Volunteerism provided via email, participants might have the grand opportunity to experience riding on a Tranvia.

Let us all volunteer and help clean up the Walled City to ensure it is clean, safe, and healthy for all. Explore Pinas!
