Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc delivered a strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, topping both Friday practice sessions at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on October 23 (October 24, Philippine time). The Monegasque driver recorded the fastest lap of 1 minute and 35.291 seconds in the second practice session, edging championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by just 0.042 seconds. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen finished third for Red Bull, 0.189 seconds behind Leclerc, while Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton secured fourth place ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell.
Leclerc’s performance reinforced Ferrari’s competitive pace ahead of qualifying, having also led the opening session earlier in the day. The second practice session featured several close battles, including an incident involving Russell and Leclerc that attracted the attention of race officials, although no further action was taken. Antonelli recovered from early difficulties with his car’s seat to produce the second-fastest lap, while Verstappen remained firmly among the frontrunners after winning the previous two races. Liam Lawson placed sixth for Racing Bulls, followed by McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, with Isack Hadjar and Oliver Bearman completing the top 10.
The weekend carries major championship implications for Antonelli, who could become Formula 1’s youngest world champion and Italy’s first drivers’ champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953 if the required results fall in his favor. Despite leading both practice sessions, Leclerc faces a difficult challenge converting Ferrari’s early speed into victory against Mercedes and Red Bull. Teams will return for final practice and qualifying on Saturday, October 24, before the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, October 25, with the race scheduled over 56 laps at the Texas circuit.
