Local government units (LGUs) across the Caraga region are intensifying preparedness efforts as Tropical Depression Querubin continues to bring heavy rainfall and rough seas, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
In Surigao del Norte, classes in the municipalities of San Francisco and Placer were suspended due to persistent heavy rains. Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers, chairperson of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), issued an advisory on Monday encouraging LGUs to implement localized class suspensions in coordination with school officials and local disaster councils.
“Surigao del Norte is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, ranging from 50 mm to 100 mm, until December 19, 2024. Rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas, potentially exacerbating conditions due to previous rainfall,” Barbers said. He also urged residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories.
The Coast Guard Station in Siargao issued a warning advising small vessels and fishing boats to avoid venturing out to sea due to rough waters. Similarly, in Surigao del Sur, the Coast Guard suspended operations of vessels weighing 15 gross tons or less as a precaution.
In Bislig City, the local disaster risk reduction and management office (DRRMO) issued a memorandum on Tuesday temporarily halting fishing and beach activities to prevent accidents caused by the worsening weather conditions.
In Agusan del Sur, rising water levels in major rivers, particularly in Rosario and Bunawan, have caused flooding in several barangays. The local government of La Paz suspended classes at all levels on Monday as heavy rains continued.
Meanwhile, in Butuan City, the local DRRMO conducted a pre-disaster risk assessment on Tuesday to evaluate the potential impact of Querubin and to coordinate appropriate response measures. LGUs in the Dinagat Islands and Agusan del Norte have also issued advisories urging residents to stay alert and monitor weather updates.
Local disaster councils across the region are on high alert, ensuring coordination between LGUs, schools, and communities to minimize the impact of Tropical Depression Querubin. Residents are advised to follow official updates from PAGASA and local authorities for guidance on evacuation and safety measures.
