Camotes airport project takes flight with new financial support

By Xander Ledesma

Deputy Speaker Vincent Franco ‘Duke’ Frasco announced in a social media post an additional P120 million allocation for the construction of a new terminal at the Camotes Domestic Airport, in Camotes Islands, Cebu. This development represents a substantial step in enhancing the region’s accessibility, promoting tourism, and advancing the economic growth of the area.

The Camotes Islands, known for scenic beaches, clear waters, and thriving marine life, have drawn both local and international travelers in recent years. Despite their popularity, limited transportation options have constrained further tourism growth. The announcement of this new funding aligns with the Philippine government’s broader strategy to improve regional infrastructure and boost tourism across the country. This terminal aims to create a faster, more reliable way to reach the islands, which currently rely heavily on ferry services that can be disrupted by weather conditions.

Plans for an airport in the Camotes Islands have been on the drawing board for several years. The Philippine government identified the islands as a priority tourism destination in 2021, recognizing their potential to attract a greater number of tourists and increase economic activity. The P120 million allocation will support ongoing construction, with the goal of accelerating development and establishing a modern terminal that accommodates both passengers and cargo. The project not only aims to drive tourism but also aims to improve residents’ quality of life by enhancing connectivity to the mainland.

Local business owners and stakeholders are optimistic about the economic benefits associated with the airport development. Improved accessibility is expected to lead to a surge in tourism, benefiting local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, and retail shops. This tourism-driven economic growth could create numerous jobs, not only in hospitality but also in the construction and service industries. Additionally, enhanced air travel options may encourage further investment in the area, fostering a vibrant economy and benefiting the broader community.

As the project progresses, local officials have emphasized the importance of preserving the natural beauty and ecosystems that make the Camotes Islands so appealing to visitors. Working closely with environmental organizations, the project aims to balance infrastructure development with environmental stewardship. The allocation of additional funds underscores the Philippine government’s commitment to making the Camotes Islands more accessible while ensuring sustainable growth. As the Camotes Domestic Airport nears completion, the islands are poised to welcome a new era of tourism, development, and opportunity for the local population.
