The city government collected over 75,000 kilograms of waste from public markets a day after the New Year celebration, according to the third-party waste collection firm Tencil.
In a radio interview on Thursday, Jermie Danuco, Tencil’s operations manager, said the waste volume collected from five public markets was lower than in previous years due to preemptive garbage collection efforts starting on December 24, 2024.
“This year’s volume is less because we deployed trucks early to clear garbage from the public markets,” Danuco explained.
The city government contracted Tencil to handle waste collection and disposal, working alongside the City Economic Enterprises Department and the City Engineering Office to maintain cleanliness in public spaces.
City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) chief Armen Cuenca highlighted the need to manage vendor activity on sidewalks during the holiday season to reduce waste accumulation. Cuenca noted that vendors had been reminded about proper waste segregation and cleanliness but acknowledged that some did not comply.
Efforts to improve waste management are part of ongoing initiatives to maintain cleanliness during peak seasons and ensure timely garbage disposal in the city.
