Mango production in San Carlos improves after disease decline

Mango production in San Carlos City has improved following the decline of the mango pest, cecid fly, locally known as “kurikong,” according to Mayor Julier Ayoy Resuello.

Resuello said growers have reported better yields after the disease, which previously affected mango trees in the area, subsided.

With production increasing, the city government is planning to put up a mango processing plant to address potential oversupply and reduce post-harvest losses. The proposed facility would process excess mangoes into value-added products, providing additional market options for local farmers.

City officials said discussions are ongoing with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) regarding possible support for the project.

Meanwhile, the city is preparing for its annual Mango-Bamboo Festival scheduled for April 12–18, 2026, which highlights local agricultural products and cultural activities.

Local officials said the processing plant proposal forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the city’s mango industry and support its growers.
