The vibrant streets of Bacolod pulsated with energy today as the 2024 MassKara Festival culminated in a thrilling display of street dancing and competition. Leading the charge this year was Barangay Granada, which claimed the coveted title of champion, along with a P1 million cash prize and numerous distinguished awards.
The MassKara Festival, renowned for its colorful masks and lively performances, has long served as a beacon of resilience for the people of Bacolod, particularly during challenging times. This year’s celebration held extra significance, marking a triumphant return to full-scale festivities following the hardships caused by the pandemic. Visitors from across the Philippines and around the globe gathered to witness the city’s rich cultural display.
Barangay Granada captivated the audience with a performance that perfectly blended tradition with modernity. Their dancers, clad in ornate costumes and intricately designed masks, told a moving story of unity and strength, aligning with this year’s festival theme, “Masangkay, Masadya, Masaligan” (Unity, Joy, Trust). Their choreography, a seamless fusion of contemporary and traditional dance, secured them top honors, including the prestigious Best Costume and Best Choreography awards.
Since its inception in 1980, in response to Bacolod’s economic downturn due to the sugar crisis, the MassKara Festival has grown into a national celebration of hope, joy, and cultural pride. It has evolved from a local gathering to a major tourist attraction, significantly contributing to the local economy.
With Barangay Granada’s victory, the MassKara Festival 2024 reinforced its status as a cornerstone of Bacolod’s cultural identity. The triumph will echo within the barangay’s community, as their spirited performance joins the storied legacy of Bacolod’s most iconic festival.
As the festival continues with food fairs, concerts, and other events, Bacolod’s streets are still buzzing with excitement. Barangay Granada’s success this year is sure to set the bar high for future MassKara competitions.
