The Department of Health (DOH) honored Borongan City’s Libre Medisina (Free Medicine) program during the Eastern Visayas Health Summit and Awards 2024, held on December 10-11. The program was recognized for its significant impact on improving healthcare accessibility in the city.
Introduced in 2021 through Executive Ordinance No. 153, Libre Medisina has provided essential medicines to over 35,000 residents, easing the financial burden of medical expenses. The program is part of the city government’s efforts under Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda to ensure equitable healthcare access for all, irrespective of social status or political affiliation.
To further address accessibility challenges, the local government established satellite pharmacies in five barangays—Sta. Fe, San Jose, Lalawigan, Benowangan, and Maypangdan—starting in 2022. These satellite facilities make it easier for residents in remote areas to obtain their needed medications.
Beneficiaries, such as senior couple Oliver and Dorenda Cervantes, have expressed their gratitude for the program, which provides free vitamins as well as maintenance and prescription medicines. “This program is a big help to us, especially with the rising cost of medicines,” the couple shared.
The health summit recognized not only Borongan City’s efforts but also the contributions of other local government units, government hospitals, and stakeholders across Eastern Visayas. The event celebrated initiatives that have strengthened the region’s healthcare system and improved public health services.
