Basilan Bishop Dalmao recovering from heart attack

MANILA – Bishop Leo Dalmao of the Prelature of Isabela de Basilan is recovering following a heart attack last month, according to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

The CBCP said another Claretian bishop, Elias Ayuban Jr. from the Diocese of Cubao, reported during a Mass on Wednesday evening that Dalmao is getting better.

Ayuban said Dalmao had been discharged from the hospital after nearly a month of confinement, and is now recuperating at a care facility in Quezon City run by a religious congregation.

“He is already recovering… it’s really a miracle,” Ayuban said in his homily during the Mass, which ended the second day of a three-day bishops’ seminar.

Ayuban and other bishops are in Santa Rosa, Laguna for the CBCP’s plenary assembly this weekend.

Dalmao suffered heart attack while celebrating Mass at Sta. Isabel de Portugal Cathedral in Isabela City on Christmas Eve. He was transported by sea ambulance to a hospital in Zamboanga City where he underwent an angiogram and angioplasty.

On December 27, the Catholic prelate was airlifted to Metro Manila and later underwent heart surgery at a hospital. (PNA)
