Baguio City has unveiled its Solid Waste Management Plan for 2025-2034, aiming to cut daily waste disposal by more than half over the next decade. The plan seeks to decrease waste from the current 290 tons to 180 tons per day by 2029, positioning the city as a model in waste minimization and diversion.Â
Eugene Buyuccan, chief of the General Services Office, emphasized the city’s commitment to reducing waste generation through various strategies. These include promoting composting for biodegradables, encouraging the use of personal containers for food purchases, and enforcing existing ordinances such as the ban on plastic and styrofoam. Additionally, the city plans to enhance its information campaign, regularly sharing waste reduction practices on social media to engage the community.Â
To incentivize participation, Baguio will recognize active contributors through awards for the cleanest villages, best solid waste management programs across various sectors, and initiatives like the “Basura Warrior of the Year.” These efforts aim to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.Â
The city currently spends approximately PHP186 million annually on waste management, including the transport of non-biodegradable waste to a sanitary landfill outside the city. By implementing this comprehensive plan, Baguio anticipates not only environmental benefits but also significant cost savings in its waste management operations.Â
This initiative aligns with Baguio’s ongoing efforts to enhance its waste management system and reduce its environmental footprint, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment for its residents.
