MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) is launching two affordable rice options, Sulit Rice and Nutri Rice, as part of its “Rice for All” initiative, with sales starting this month.
DA Spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa said on Thursday that these rice varieties will be available at Kadiwa ng Pangulo
Centers nationwide, selected public markets, and train stations in Metro Manila.
“Sulit Rice, priced at PHP35 to PHP36 per kilo, consists of 100 percent broken grains but maintains good quality. We’ve tested cooking it at the office, and the quality is satisfactory,” De Mesa said in a Bagong Pilipinas interview.
Nutri Rice, sold for PHP37 to PHP38 per kilo, retains higher nutrient content as it is a one-pass milled variety, providing more fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
“The nutrients in Nutri Rice are substantial, which is why we call it Nutri Rice. It offers both fiber and essential vitamins and minerals,” De Mesa explained.
In addition to these options, the DA will continue offering Rice for All at PHP38 to PHP39 per kilo, following a gradual price reduction in 2024.
De Mesa assured the public of sufficient rice supply, sourced both locally and through imports, with distribution managed by the Food Terminal Incorporated (FTI).
“Marami tayong supply at we can assure the public na sapat ang supply para sa lahat (We have plenty of supply and can assure the public that there is enough for everyone),” he said.
The DA aims to recover palay production and reach 20 million metric tons this year to sustain the initiative. (PNA)
